Episode 2: Uneasy Alliances

The first night back in Harrows Hollow was a sleepless one for Claire Weston. The documents she had uncovered in her father’s study played over and over in her mind: cryptic ledgers, payments to untraceable accounts, and the names of infamous criminal syndicates—Big Cartel, Patel Cartel, Funky Town Cartel, and Hearthstone Jade Cartel. Each name carried a weight that made her stomach twist. Her father, the man she had always known as calculated and upright, had been involved in something far darker than she could have imagined.

Seeking Detective Rhodes

By morning, Claire knew she needed answers. Her brother Eli’s vague warnings hadn’t helped, and her instincts told her he was hiding something. Instead of confronting him again, she decided to reach out to Detective Amelia Rhodes, the officer handling her father’s case. Amelia, known for her no-nonsense demeanor and ability to navigate Harrows Hollow’s murky politics, seemed like the only person who might shed light on the truth.

The police station, a small, unassuming building on the edge of town, reflected the decay of Harrows Hollow with its peeling paint and faded sign. Inside, Claire’s heart pounded as she made her way to Amelia’s office. The detective greeted her with a sharp, knowing look.

“Claire Weston,” Amelia said, leaning back in her chair. “I was wondering when you’d show up.”

Claire placed the folder of documents on Amelia’s desk. “Detective Rhodes, I found these in my father’s study. I think they might explain... why he’s gone.”

Uncovering a Dark Truth

As Amelia flipped through the documents, her calm demeanor faltered. Her jaw tightened at the sight of the cartel names. “Your father wasn’t just a businessman,” Amelia said bluntly. “He was laundering money for some very dangerous people—Big Cartel, Patel Cartel, Funky Town Cartel, Hearthstone Jade Cartel. These organizations don’t tolerate mistakes. If your father’s gone, something went very wrong.”

Claire’s chest tightened. “You think he was murdered.”

Amelia didn’t confirm but warned Claire to stop digging. “These cartels don’t just kill. They erase. If you keep asking questions, you’ll make yourself a target.”

Confronting Eli

Back at the house, Claire found Eli smoking in the garden. Determined to get answers, she confronted him. “Why didn’t you tell me about Dad’s dealings with the cartels?”

Eli’s expression darkened as he admitted the truth. “Dad thought he could outsmart them, Claire. He thought he could work with the cartels without getting his hands dirty. But when you stop being useful to them, you’re disposable.”

“So you knew, and you did nothing?” Claire snapped.

“What was I supposed to do?” Eli retorted. “They would’ve killed him if he tried to walk away. And now that you’re digging around, they’ll come after you too.”

A Threat in the Shadows

That night, as Claire reviewed the documents in her father’s study, a sound outside the window made her freeze. Peering through the glass, she saw a shadowy figure standing at the edge of the trees, barely visible in the moonlight. Her phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number: “You’re digging in dangerous places. Stop before it’s too late.”

Heart pounding, Claire called Amelia. “There’s someone outside,” she whispered. “I think I’m being watched.”

“Lock your doors,” Amelia instructed. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

As Claire hung up, she realized she had crossed a line. The cartels were no longer distant threats—they were here, watching her every move. The shadows of Harrows Hollow had come alive, and there was no turning back.
